Creative ways to support Bright Beginnings

Dear Supporter,

Our Bright Beginnings family has so much to be thankful for this holiday season! Homeless families, and their young children, are facing tough economic times and have an uphill road to travel to achieve self sufficiency but there are many reasons for hope. Our local and extended community comes through again and again with generous grants and donations to support our high-quality education, therapeutic and family services and provide the important extras (such as toys, grocery store gift cards and Metro cards) that mean so much to our families.

I am inspired by partners like the Office of the State Superintendent of Education who recently renewed funding for our two Pre-K classrooms. Freddie Mac, a long-time funder and partner, has renewed their commitment for another year. Fannie Mae continues to provide a high-profile way to bring more awareness to homelessness in our region through the Help the Homeless Walkathon each year. Bright Beginnings is proud to receive financial support from supporters like Bank of America, Nestlé, the Carter & Melissa Cafritz Charitable Trust and the Cornell Douglas Foundation. I am also pleased to welcome new funders to our Capital Campaign such as the Clark Charitable Foundation and the David and Leighan Rinker Foundation which will help us build a new center East of the River to serve more children. Bright Beginnings also owes special gratitude to the Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, the Meyer Foundation and the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region.

We appreciate every financial and in-kind donation and every volunteer who supports our services for homeless families with young children. Each and every action makes a difference and makes it possible to create bright beginnings for special children and their families. On their behalf, I thank you and ask for your continued support in the year ahead.

Happy Holidays!

Dr. Betty Jo Gaines
Executive Director

P.S.Your financial support makes a critical difference to our services for homeless families with young children. I hope you will consider a generous gift to support our work before the end of the year.

Volunteer Spotlight: Safeway Really Cares

In November, Bright Beginnings welcomed an enthusiastic team of Safeway store managers who volunteered in our classrooms for children 6 weeks to 5 years old and donated items from their stores for our children and parents. After a tour of our classrooms, 14 Safeway store managers from the Alexandria, Annandale, Arlington, Bailey’s Crossroads, Dupont Circle, Fairfax, McArthur Boulevard, Springfield and Watergate stores spent time reading to our infants, making homemade butter and creating artwork in our Pre-K classrooms and splashing in the water table with our toddlers. Safeway Manager Scott Stanley said, “While I was only able to spend a few hours with your very special children, I know I will never forget the experience.” We send a special thank you to Eugene Peters, the Dupont Circle Safeway Manager, for organizing the visit and the generous donation of store items for children and their parents.

Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Walkathon

Bright Beginnings, a proud beneficiary of Fannie Mae’s Help the Homeless Walkathon, fielded its largest team of sponsors, donors and walkers in November and raised awareness of homeless families with young children. The Bright Beginnings team was inspired every step of the way by signs that identified a specific child they were walking for that day. Bright Beginnings gratefully acknowledges generous sponsorships from ATSC/APPIX, the Greater Capital Area Association of Realtors (GCAAR Cares), the American Legacy Foundation and the SunDial Foundation. We send extra special credit to all the participants and organizers of the Beauvoir Miniwalk who are faithful supporters of Bright Beginnings.
