Giving your time and talent is one of the most rewarding ways you can support the mission of Bright Beginnings. Whether you are supporting the classroom staff in our toddler room or giving a presentation on writing a resume or healthy eating on a budget during a parent workshop, there are many ways to get involved. General Volunteer Requirements:

Bright Beginnings, Inc. welcomes the opportunity to work with volunteers on the following projects. Please fill out an online application and contact the volunteer coordinator at or call 202-842-9090. Volunteer opportunities are available Monday – Wednesday and Friday’s.


Parent Resource Center
Bright Beginnings’ family service team works one-on-one with families to identify personal and family challenges, set goals to overcome obstacles and achieve self-sufficiency. Parents are provided with referrals to food banks, housing, legal support, education programs and job training through the Contextual Training Program (CTP) and in-house Social Workers. After making sure families meet their basic needs of food, shelter and clothing, we create a plan to complete their educational aspirations and, find and secure employment and housing. Volunteers can work on one of the following activities:

- Job training
- Workforce preparation including learning soft/new skills
- Parent training
- Wellness and health information
- Legal resources
- Financial literacy

Classroom Assistant
Teachers often need a helping hand in the classroom to work with children in small groups in different learning areas in the classrooms. Volunteers may be asked to work one on one with children, clean the classroom and assisting with various administrative tasks. If you are planning a volunteer activity for your group, we ask that no more than 12 volunteers as a time serve as classroom assistants for our 7 classrooms.

Volunteer Readers
Since literacy is such a big focus for our early childhood program, we can always use volunteers to read an age-appropriate story to our children. It is always a joy for the children to have new faces and voices read to them during their large group and story time.

Parent Auction
Our annual Parent Auction in June is a major incentive program for parents that increases parent participation in activities with their children and at Bright Beginnings. Parents earn auction points based on their participation in our activities. Our parents spend auction points on household, bathroom and kitchen items, movie passes, children’s clothes, gift cards, diapers and toys. Volunteers are always needed to solicit auction items and help the social services team organize and run the auction.

Sprucing up the Center (suggested for groups of 25 or more)
At regular intervals, we do major cleaning at the center, which may involve cleaning the playground equipment, washing the walls and disinfecting toys and indoor play areas. If you are artistically inclined, we also encourage volunteers who can design and paint murals for our hallways or paint our classrooms on a weekend.

Field Trip Sponsors

In addition to monthly curriculum-based field trips, volunteers may sponsor an outside activity for our children and serve as chaperones and/or coordinators for the event.

Bright Beginnings, Inc. Frequently Asked Volunteer Questions

What kind of volunteers are you looking for?
Bright Beginnings is looking for volunteers that are a minimum of 16 yrs. old and have availability to volunteer during the day Monday-Friday. Traditionally we incorporate volunteers at our center between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday-Friday.

What should I do first if I want to volunteer?
The first thing you should do is visit our volunteer opportunities page on the BBI website. If you find a role that is of interest to you, contact BBI’s Volunteering and Communication Specialist, Whitney Faison at

What should I wear?
Volunteers should dress for comfort. Jeans and sneakers are fine as long as you feel comfortable and are able to move around. Volunteers must wear closed toed shoes while volunteering.

Where should I go when I arrive?
When you arrive to Bright Beginnings, you must first go to the main office to sign in on the volunteer log. After you have signed in and hung up your items, BBI’s front desk manager will call the Volunteer Coordinator down to greet you.

How do I schedule groups?
You can schedule groups by contacting Volunteer and Communications Specialist, Whitney Faison. Groups looking to volunteer should inquire about a month before head. During the week we can work with group up to 10 volunteers maximum. During the weekends we can work with 15 volunteers maximum.

Can I volunteer on the weekends?
We facilitate weekend volunteer opportunity once a month for groups only. Our families do not attend Bright Beginnings during the weekends, so those looking to interact with children and families must schedule weekday hours.

Can I volunteer with my child?
Because of safety regulations and child care laws, volunteers must be a minimum of 16 yrs. to volunteer.
